The Fiji Labour Party and its senior officials are being sued for 600-thousand US dollars for allegedly publishing defamatory material in their monthly newsletter.

The writ filed in the Lautoka High Court names the defendants as the party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry; its president Jokapeci Koroi, Lautoka MP Dr Ganesh Chand, and an official of Labour's Lautoka branch.

The defamation case has been brought by officials of the Sugar Festival Association, which holds an annual carnival in Lautoka.

The association president, Bijesh Chand, its vice president Push Raj and his wife Anita, and the secretary Rajendra Prasad say the Labour Party newsletter made false and malicious statements which have damaged their reputation and brought them into contempt.
