Call to ease restrictions on expatriate executives in Fiji

9:14 am on 21 October 2004

The Australia-Fiji Business Council has called on the Fiji government to ease restrictions on the entry of expatriate executives coming to work in the country.

The council president, Bob Lyon, says market forces should be the key criteria to determine whether an expatriate should be allowed into Fiji.

Mr Lyon says this is because no company would engage an expatriate unless it was essential to do so given the high cost associated with employing an expatriate.

He says easing the restrictions would lead to healthy bilateral relation between Australia and Fiji.
