Fiji cabinet minister likely to face charges - report

8:15 am on 23 October 2004

Fiji police are reported to be closing in on a cabinet minister and other political figures to lay serious coup related charges.

Fiji TV reports that two former MPs are also on their watchlist.

The report says police would not name the cabinet minister but confirmed that he also took an illegal oath during the coup to join George Speight's failed administration.

It says police believe they have sufficient evidence to lay charges.

The new police spokesman, Acting Assistant Superintendent Kolinio Vunaki, says they will not comment yet because the matter is sensitive as a cabinet minister is involved.
