3:17 pm on 3 November 2004

Taiwan has announced that it has set up diplomatic relations with Vanuatu.

This was made public by the foreign ministry in Taipei.

The move brings the number of countries that have official relations with Taiwan back to 27, after the Caribbean country of Dominica switched recognition to Beijing in March.

Taiwan has diplomatic ties with 6 Pacific countries, getting the support of Kiribati most recently.

Taiwan and China accuse each other of using dollar diplomacy to sway potential diplomatic partners.
