PNG police patrol Solomon Islands capital in first overseas mission

Police from Papua New Guinea have begun their first overseas deployment.

The officers are taking part in the regional assistance mission to Solomon Islands.

The three women and seven men from the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary began patrols yesterday in Honiara.

PNG had to amend its own constitution in order to make its police officers able to participate in the Solomon Islands mission.

The PNG Constitution had stated that the country's police officers could only work within PNG's borders.

But this was amended in January to allow the deployment to go ahead.
