Confusion over Jakarta's decision to axe split of Papua into several provinces

There's confusion about the administration of the province of Papua after Indonesia's Constitutional Court annulled a law which splits the region into three.

However, in the same judgment yesterday, the court recognised the existence of one of the new provinces, called West Irian Jaya.

The Papuan church leader Herman Saud says the ruling, which creates two provinces, makes no legal sense.

He says it shows the Indonesian government has interfered with the judicial process.

Most native Papuans oppose the division of the province, which is at odds with a law created three years ago that gives the Papua special autonomy.
