American Samoa's Auditor, George Webster, has called on the U.S. Department of Interior to consider reinstituting the position of Government Comptroller
In a letter to the department, Mr Webster says government corruption and abuse in the territory continue unabated, but the laws under which he operates are ineffective, and severely impair his ability to carry out his duties.
He says in contrast the laws governing the office of a Government Comptroller are well-crafted and grant the comptroller broad powers, including the ability to conduct comprehensive audits.
Mr Webster says he would like to be considered as an applicant if a comptroller is appointed.
