Solomons union dismisses company claims in plantation dispute

4:49 pm on 23 November 2004

The Solomon Islands union of workers is dismissing as misleading, claims death threats could be made, if an industrial dispute worsens.

Police say nothing has changed overnight since workers, on behalf of the 800 on strike at Russell Islands Plantation Estates, occupied some of the company offices at Yandina.

The board chairman Patrick Wong says he's been told in no uncertain terms that if the general manager, John Whiteside, returns, his life will be threatened.

But the general secretary of the national union of workers, Tony Kagovai, says Mr Wong's claims are misleading.

"For the last six months the workers haven't done anything wrong in Yandina. So that's a misleading statement, it's misleading the public and it's also misleading the region and also investors."

However, Mr Kagovai does says Mr Whiteside has treated workers inhumanly, and that they can't return to work until he leaves.

The company describes the standoff, as a test for the Solomons' government.

The labour minister, Walton Naezon, has not been available for comment.
