American Samoa Congressman says auditor should consider resigning

2:04 pm on 25 November 2004

The American Samoan member of the US Congress, Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, says George Webster has gone beyond his authority as the territorial auditor.

Mr Webster says he has a lack of enforcement powers, he cannot compel territorial departments to undergo audits and his office is totally dependent on the executive for funding.

He has now approached the U.S. Department of Interior over his concerns.

But Faleomavaega says if Mr Webster is unhappy about what he can accomplish, he should step down.

"In terms of them not being responsive, there is a procedure, a process. And if in effect that he cannot fulfill what he considers to be his responsibility, he should simply resign."
