Fiji Conservative Alliance MP says Labour Party now accepts coup support was sincere and genuine

Fiji's pro-coup Conservative Alliance Matanitu Vanua Party says it believes the Labour Party has come to accept that what its members did in 2000 in overthrowing the Chaudhry government was sincere and genuine.

This view was expressed on Fiji TV last night by the Conservative Alliance MP and George Speight's brother, Samisoni Tikonisau.

Mr Tikonisau was commenting on the Labour Party's decision to award a coup convict who is standing as a candidate in a forthcoming by-election a higher preference than it had given several other candidates.

The candidate is Josefa Savua who, as a reserve major, marched a group of soldiers into parliament to support the coup while Mahendra Chaudhry and his government were held hostage.

Mr Savua is the brother of the former police commissioner, Col Isikia Savua, whose coup investigation file is now with the director of public prosecutions.

Mr Savua was released earlier this year after serving a prison sentence for his role in the coup.

The Labour leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, has not commented on Mr Tikonisau's reasons for Labour's support for Josefa Savua.

The by-election for the North East Fijian Communal Constituency will be held next month.
