American Samoan Senate committee investigating corruption wants treasury official cited

American Samoa's Senate Select Investigative Committee has asked the court to cite former Treasury employee Poe Faumuina for contempt for ignoring a committee subpoena.

Its court petition states that the committee issued a subpoena to Faumuina to give testimony and documents before the committee on November 18th.

However, Faumuina failed to appear and also failed to produce the subpoened documents.

An affidavit by SSIC chairman, Senator Lualemaga Faoa, said that when Faumuina was handed the document, he informed the server that he was advised by the Attorney General, Fiti Sunia, not to appear or to honor the latest SSIC subpoena.

Faumuina has admitted in the media that he used money that he had collected from businesses owing money to the government.

He also said it was a normal practice for Treasury employees to borrow money from the government's coffers and pay them back.
