Striking New Caledonian workers ejected from television transmitter site

Police in New Caledonia have cleared a television transmitter site after it was occupied by union members in support of a strike at the public broadcaster, RFO.

The strike is in its fourth month and a small number of RFO staff taking part in the stoppage have blocked access to the station, hampering the production of local news.

The workers who are not taking part in the strike have been in other premises from which production material worth almost 150,000 US dollars has been stolen this week.

Tension over the RFO strike has risen and the USTKE union has warned of more action today as well as a possible call for a general strike.
