French Polynesia's Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party has named the fisheries minister, Tearii Alpha, as the new head of its youth wing.

The Tahitipresse news agency says Mr Alpha replaces Reynald Temarii who resigned from the party last week, citing disagreements over party policies following the May general elections.

Mr Alpha was appointed to the ministerial post in October by President Gaston Flosse.

Mr Temarii was a sports minister in a previous Flosse government and is also the president of the regional soccer body, the Oceania Football Confederation.

Last month, he was appointed to be the head of the board of the public broadcaster, Tahiti Nui TV, but lost the job two weeks later.

Mr Temarii is reported to be planning to set up his own party as territory is preparing for partial elections now due in February.
