PNG governor general chides public servants

4:25 pm on 9 December 2004

The Governor-General of Papua New Guinea says the country is a time bomb because of poor performance and lack of commitment to work by the public servants.

The Post Courier reports that Sir Paulias Matane said public servants turned up late for work and yet were paid in full.

Sir Paulius says many should not be called public servants but self servants because they serve themselves and not the people.

The Governor-General also spoke of the attitude or lack of it towards the society and the social problems such as the HIV/AIDS epidemic when he officiated at a graduation of the Utmei Secondary School in East New Britain.
