Fiji's ruling SDL party has won the weekend by-election for the North East Fijian Urban Communal Constituency which it had held before.

The SDL's candidate, Nanise Nagusuca, won the seat by polling 2739 of the first preferences votes.

The Fiji Labour Party candidate received 673 votes while the coup convict and Conservative Alliance candidate, Josefa Savua, received 518 votes.

Although voting is compulsory in Fiji, only 5,100 of the 16,300 registered voters in the constituency cast their ballots.
