Taiwan accuses China of influencing Vanuatu ousting

2:17 pm on 13 December 2004

Taiwan has accused China of trying to sway the outcome of Saturday's Taiwanese parliamentary election by pressuring Vanuatu's parliament to dismiss the prime minister of Vanuatu, Serge Vohor.

In a vote of no confidence, Mr Vohor was ousted just a month after he signed a communique establishing diplomatic relations with Taiwan despite his country's existing ties with Beijing.

Taiwan's foreign ministry spokesman, says Taiwanese diplomats will remain in Port Vila until the last minute to communicate with the new government.

Michel Lu says the communique should still be valid.
