The sacked chairman of the Telikom Board in Papua New Guinea says it is fighting the government in court because it has the best interests of the company in mind.
Last week Dr Florian Gubon and his board were sacked by the Telecommunications Minister, Dr Puka Temu, for their opposition to the sale of Telikom to an African company.
The Prime Minister has now instructed Dr Temu to reinstate the board, which he has yet to do.
Dr Gubon says the board is not undermining the minister by taking him and the state to court.
He says they are pointing out that the government tried to carry out the sale of a state asset without the approval of cabinet, which is illegal.
"Based on proper legal advice we have commenced these court proceedings. Mainly to try and protect and exercise our fiduciary duties, because we owe that duty, under company law, to the company and not necesarily the shareholder."
