PNG police say arrest of governor has eased tensions

Police in Papua New Guinea say the arrest of the Madang governor on rape charges has eased tensions.

James Yali has been arrested and charged with the alleged rape of a 17-year old girl in Madang.

Commander Giosi Labi says the arrest has answered the concerns of Women's Rights Groups which had criticised the lack of progress into the investigation.

Mr Labi says it shows there is one rule for all in PNG.

He also says the feeling in the area has become more relaxed.

"Lots of people they said the sooner these things are done with they would be more happy. I was in Madang a few weeks ago and the situation was very tense. As of today the situation is back to normal and people are going about their day to day business in Madang."
