Fiji PM reprimanded over his MPs conduct

2:35 pm on 16 December 2004

Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, has been publicly reprimanded for the conduct of his members of parliament.

The Fiji Sun says the reprimand was delivered during the prayer session at yesterday's Great Council of Chiefs' meeting by a Methodist church minister, the Reverend Isireli Caucau, who is the father of the minister for women, Adi Asenaca.

The Reverend Caucau said the contribution of some MPs was pathetic and their conduct and performance left a lot to be desired.

He said they were poor examples to people children in the public gallery or those who watched proceedings from home on television.

The Reverend Caucau said unity and reconciliation could not be achieved if MPs failed to respect one another.

Mr Qarase later told a reporter that the issue had been a matter of concern to him for some time and he hoped members improve their behaviour from next year.
