9:16 am on 17 December 2004

The Australian government has offered to provide the next Solomon Islands Police Commissioner.

This was revealed by the Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Bruce Billson, who says Australia stands ready to assist if approached.

"We've responded favourably and that is our intention, but we stand ready to provide whatever assistance can best support the people of Solomon Islands."

The current Police Commissioner, William Morrell, who is funded by the European Union, will finish his contract at the end of this month.
