Solomons to get an Australian Police Commissioner

5:42 pm on 17 December 2004

Solomon Islands has accepted an Australian offer to provide a new police commissioner for the country.

Australia's Foreign Minister Alexander Downer made the offer during talks in Honiara on Thursday with the Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Sir Allan Kemakeza.

Radio Australia reports the term of the current Solomon Islands Police Commissioner, Bill Morrell, expires at the end of this month.

Morrell's position had been funded by the European Union.

Mr Downer said Fiji was very happy with the Australian police commissioner there, and he was certain Australia could find a good replacement for Mr Morrell.

Sir Allan Kemakeza said Solomon Islands would accept because it would take too long for new funding to come through from the European Union.
