A Russian supply ship to the International Space Station has crashed into the south Pacific between New Zealand and South America.

The Progress M-50 with rubbish, spent equipment and a space suit, was dumped in what Russian news agencies describe as a "non-navigable" part of the Pacific in the early hours of this morning.

The ship ditched 3,000 kilometres east of Wellington.

Russian officials say the next supply ship is expected to take off on Sunday, to deliver about 2.5 tonnes of cargo to the space station.
