Surfer dies in French Polynesia as high waves strike

2:15 pm on 29 December 2004

A surfer has died at the weekend near French Polynesia's main island of Tahiti and another is missing in neighbouring Moorea after unusually high seas from a tropical depression called Judy.

Police said the surfer, whose name has not been disclosed, was a holidaymaker.

He was caught in freak waves on the Eastern coast of Tahiti and was washed onto the reef.

France's High Commission has urged members of the public, and surfers in particular, to exercise caution in such weather conditions and to refrain from going to the beach or at sea.
