Solomons authorities warn against posession of imitation firearms

10:42 am on 5 January 2005

Military and civilian leaders of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands have issued a joint warning reminding all citizens that it is illegal to carry imitation weapons.

In a joint statement the RAMSI leaders expressed concerns about avoiding a tragedy where a RAMSI solider or police officer responds in self defence when confronted with someone carrying an imitation pistol.

RAMSI's Military Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Chris Field says even up close, the imitation pistols look very realistic and it is difficult to tell the difference from the real thing.

The mission's Special Coordinator James Batley also expressed his concern saying split second decisions will be made that could have dire consequences.

Meanwhile Commander of the Participating Police Forces Sandi Peisley agrees that through professional training, cool heads and the discipline of the police and military, tragedy has been averted.

Over the last few weeks, RAMSI personnel have encountered a number of people carrying imitation weapons in various part of the capital.
