9:20 am on 6 January 2005

Weather forecasters in Vanuatu and Solomon Islands are closely monitoring a tropical depression which may develop into a cyclone.

The Vanuatu met service says at this stage the system doesn't pose any direct threat to any of Vanuatu's island groups.

Forecasters in Solomon Islands have warned the people of Tikopia and Anuta islands in Temotu province to expect strong winds.

The Principal Meteorological Officer Forecasting, Fredie Fera says strong winds are expected to develop further into cyclone stage and hit both islands within the next 24 hours.

He says people there must take precautionary measures to avoid loss of life.
