Light stolen, POM ships face danger

Vandalism is putting ships travelling into Papua New Guinea's Fairfax Harbour at risk of running aground, after the reef guiding light there was stolen.

The reef light, located about 30 metres from the wharf in Port Moresby, was stolen over the Christmas period, after undergoing repairs in November.

The Post Courier reports maritime navigational manager, Robert Kaul, saying yesterday (Thurs) that a memo had been sent to the hydrographic office in Australia.

He says the theft has also been reported to local police and an investigation is underway.

Mr Kaul says the navigational division of the Transport Department has had 80 to 90 percent of its properties, vandalised.
