Chinese TV company warns of legal action against Fiji government

A Chinese television company has threatened to take legal action against the Fiji government.

Fu Shun Television says it was given approval to set up a pay television service in Vanua Levu in 2001.

But although it invested more than a million dollars in setting up its equipment and facilities in Labasa for a 20-channel service, it has not yet been given an operating licence.

The company's director, Zhang Bai Yang, is calling on the government for an explanation.

Mr Zhang says the Fiji government is breaking the law by protecting Fiji Television Limited's monopoly and blocking fair trading and fair competition.

He says the government has also broken its promise to an investor, which he says is poor governance.
