Fiji PM declares 2005 National Year of Forgiveness

8:27 am on 20 January 2005

Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, has declared 2005 as the National Year of Forgiveness.

Mr Qarase says Fiji's communities need to come together to pray, confess and forgive to ensure peace, stability and progress for the country.

Mr Qarase says the government has recognised the importance of divine intervention in social reconstruction and national healing.

But the Labour Party spokesman, Poseci Bune, has told the Daily Post newspaper that true reconciliation can only come when the prime minister follows the law.

The government had declared 2004 as the National Year of Prayer.
