Intelsat and Telecom New Zealand have restored phone services to the main Tokelau atoll of Nukunonu, after the failure of the region's main telecoms satellite.

The two companies are to continue this weekend in working to restore phone links to the two other atolls in Tokelau, Fakaofo and Atafu.

Phone services resumed in Tuvalu on Thursday, while Scott Base in Antarctica has been restored for a period between 9.30am and 11pm each day.

A spokeswoman for Telecom New Zealand, Sarah Berry says some Pacific Island states may still have some problems with telephone overloading.
