Fiji's PM forced to reconsider police budget as crime increases

Fiji's Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase appears to have been forced into reconsidering the police budget in the face of a burgeoning crime wave.

A Cabinet sub committee has been appointed to look into the issue.

The Fiji Live site reports that Mr Qarase says the surge in criminal activities has prompted him to look at police resources to address the problem.

He says the committee will have to hear submissions from the Police Commissioner, Andrew Hughes, before they make any decisions.

Mr Qarase says the committee is treating the request as high priority due to the sharp increase in crime.
