The Finance Minister of Niue has welcomed the start of work on the site for a new 4-point -2 million US dollar hospital.

Groundwork at the Kaimiti site started last week and Toke Talagi says it is an exciting time on the island.

Niue's hospital was destroyed during Cyclone Heta last year.

Toke Talagi says the new hospital, which is being funded by New Zealand and the EU, will hopefully be operating by 2006.

"I think they're working at the present moment at getting the logistics of equipment and material organised in New Zealand and we expect them to be here by mid-February or early March. We expect the hospital to be completed before the end of this year."
