Solomons police charge 58 after officers wounded in clash

The Royal Solomon Islands Police says it's charged 58 people with actual bodily harm after two officers were wounded in a clash involving striking plantation workers.

Constable Selwyn Tiaro says the accused have been bailed to reappear in court in Honiara on the eighth of February, and face a maximum of six months' jail each if convicted.

The mass arrest came last Tuesday after striking workers at the Russell Islands Plantation stoned police officers who had been shielding a group of workers loading a ship with copra and cocoa.

Constable Tiaro says only five local police officers are now guarding the estate at Yandina.

"The two deployments that have been sent down to Russell have returned to Honiara, and the situation down there is quiet at the moment. The situation between the police and the company workers at the moment, actually it's already been back to normal since the day the riot took place."

Constable Tiaro says a patrol boat can take reinforcements quickly from Honiara to Yandina if more confrontation is likely at the next shiploading.
