2:12 pm on 28 January 2005

A German education adviser working on the Papua New Guinea of Bougainville has been airlifted to Brisbane in a critical condition after being stabbed by an intruder at his house.

Peter Braun, a vocational school coordinator with Bougainville's education division through the German Development Service, was asleep in the house with his wife and daughter when the intruder attacked on Wednesday night.

He was stabbed in the head, neck and mouth and immediately taken to Buka hospital for treatment before being flown to Brisbane by Niugini Air Rescue yesterday.

Police have arrested a man and charged him with attempted murder.
