PNG media get chance to improve services through new AUSaid scheme

The President of the Media Council in Papua New Guinea says media organisations now have a chance to improve operations under a new Australian aid scheme.

The five year Media for Development Initiative is funded by AusAID at an initial cost of around 1.6 million US dollars, covering the first 18-months of the scheme.

Peter Aitsi, who's also the general manager of PNG FM, says media organisations will be able to fund more training opportunities, develop their advertising, and improve programme content.

He says the Media Council will manage the program, but it will have its work cut doing so.

"The idea is for the facility to offer a financial resource there that the media organisations can tap into to supplement their on going programme work, and spin that off into civil society groups so that they can use the material for their civil education programmes."
