British Queen to remain on Fiji banknotes

Fiji's cabinet has decided that the portrait of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II will remain on new bank notes to be issued in 2007, 20 years after she ceased to be the country's head of state after the Rabuka coups of 1987.

A government statement says the decision is intended to retain Fiji's historic links with the British Crown.

The decision came just ahead of an announcement that the heir to the British throne, Prince Charles, will visit Fiji next month.
