Two senior Fiji police officers in court for assault

9:27 am on 8 February 2005

Two senior officers of the Fiji police have appeared in the Lautoka magistrate's court charged with assault.

The Divisional Police Commander Western, Senior Superintendent Eroni Antonio, and the Divisional Crime Officer Western, Sur Sen, have been charged with assaulting a fellow officer during a Christmas party at the Lautoka police station last December.

Antonio has pleaded not guilty to three charges of assaulting Assistant Superintendent Jone Baravi whilst Sen has pleaded not guilty to one charge.

Lautoka magistrate, Shafi-ullah Khan, has disqualified himself from hearing the case on the grounds that he knows both of the accused in a professional capacity.

He says he'll ask for a new magistrate from Suva to preside over the case when it's next called.
