Firefighters at New Caledonia airport suspend strike

4:21 pm on 11 February 2005

Air traffic at New Caledonia's international airport is expected to return to normal after a three-month firefighters' strike was suspended.

The Nouvelles Caledoniennes newspaper reports that they held talks with the government on a range of grievances and meetings within the next month will determine whether the dispute will be settled.

The French high commission requisitioned five firefighters to remain on duty to comply with safety regulations.

The strike restricted flight movements and prompted some cancellations when the five firefighters on duty stayed away.
