Former RAMSI police commander gives evidence in Keke trial

8:39 am on 12 February 2005

A former commander of regional assistance police in Solomon Islands has given evidence at the trial on murder charges of the former militant Harold Keke.

Keke, along with cohorts Ronnie Cawa and Francis Lela, have pleaded innocent to the murder of the cabinet minister, Father Augustine Geve, on the Weathercoast of Guadalcanal on August 20th, 2002.

Mr McDevitt told the High Court in Honiara yesterday he arrested Keke on August 8th, 2003, in connection with one case of robbery.

Mr McDevitt told the court Keke expressed concern about the safety of himself, his wife, children and father.

Mr McDevitt's evidence won't be allowed as evidence in the main trial until legal issues have been resolved, in connection with the involvement of Ronnie Cawa in the case, who'd allegedly never been told he was a suspect.
