There have been calls in Fiji to isolate HIV/ AIDS sufferers on a remote island.
The Daily Post reports that the calls were made by viewers of the Fijian language TV programme, Viti Ni Kua.
The viewers called by telephone to say that HIV /AIDS sufferers should be isolated on a remote island, just as leprosy patients were isolated on Makogai Island in the first half of the 20th century.
The callers said this would ensure that the disease did not spread.
But the doctor in charge of the HIV/AIDs section of the Ministry of Health, Dr Jiko Luveni, strongly opposed the isolation calls, saying this would stop people from going for blood tests to check for the disease.
Recent reports have said that many people even in remote rural villagers have been suffering and dying from HIV/AIDS and no one has wanted to take care of the victims.
