Fiji's military commander calls off news conference

9:09 am on 15 February 2005

Fiji's military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has unexpectedly called off a much publicised news conference scheduled for today.

At the meeting with the media, he was expected to have spoken of controversial issues such as the withdrawal of the prime minister's military security, the financial surcharge imposed on him, and the recall of the deserter, Lt Col Filipo Tarakinikini.

But, Commodore Bainimarama told Radio Legend this morning that he has called off the meeting with the media.

Instead, he says a media statement would be released by the chief executive of the Prime Minister's Office, Jioji Kotobalavu.

The developments come after a meeting of the National Security Council at the weekend and President Iloilo's one to one meetings with the military commander and the prime minister yesterday.

The public stand-off between the military and the government is also expected to feature at today's meeting of the cabinet.
