American Samoa governor views cyclone damage during Manu'a islands trip

9:04 am on 19 February 2005

The governor of American Samoa, Togiola Tulafono, has visited the Manu'a islands to assess damage from Cyclone Olaf.

Daniel Fiu from the Emergency Operations Centre says initial reports indicate Cyclone Olaf didn't cause as much damage as first thought.

Mr Fiu says assessment teams have already been sent, and more are going over the weekend to confirm those reports.

"The governor has flown to Manu'a to get a look at the entire islands. The assessment team went there together with the governor, so actually there were three trips to the islands, that's about sixty miles from the main island of Tutuila."

Mr Fiu says there have been no injuries but two heavily pregnant women had to be flown to Tutuila in case there were any complications.
