The Fiji Labour Party has appointed senior MP Poseci Bune as its new deputy opposition leader.

Mr Bune succeeds Krishna Datt who is stepping down for health reasons but will retain the position of party whip.

Another senior Labour MP, Dr Ganesh Chand, has announced that he will not be contesting next year's general election.

Dr Chand, who was the minister for national planning in the deposed Chaudhry government, has cited personal, political and professional reasons for his decision.

He says it is time for someone else to represent the Lautoka constituency.

Meanwhile, the Labour leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, says MPs who have not been performing will not be given party tickets next year because Labour does not want to be carrying dead wood.
