Forum head to push Pacific women's cause at UN

The Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, Greg Urwin, says while the quality of life for women in the Pacific may have generally improved, there is no room for complacency and it is by no means universally so.

He was speaking ahead of a meeting next week at the United Nations in New York, to review ten years of progress on the Beijing Platform for Action for the Advancement of Women.

Mr Urwin says much more needs to be done to live up to international and national commitments, especially in the area of gender mainstreaming across all sectors of government.

And he says Forum delegates at the meeting will work as a group to ensure that Pacific issues are acknowledged in the outcomes of the review.
