Plans to kidnap Bainimarama during coup

A court martial in Fiji has been told of plans to kidnap the military commander, Commodore Bainimarama, at Nadi Airport and have him taken out by rebel soldiers during the coup.

The Daily Post reports that this was part of the evidence given by Lt Col Viliame Seruvakula in the court martial of Corporal Lagilagi Vosabeci for his role in the coup.

Lt Col Seruvakula told the court that military intelligence had intercepted and verified communications about removing two targets.

He said the plot to kidnap Commodore Bainimarama, who was overseas at the time of the coup, on his arrival at Nadi Airport was one of them.

Lt Col Seruvakula said from information gathered by undercover agents he knew that the public march in Suva against the Chaudhry government on May 19th 2000, which coincided with the coup in parliament, could turn ugly.

He said he was told that some senior military officers, including Lt Col Filipo Tarakinikini and Col Jone Baledrokadroka, were behind the takeover.

The court martial is continuing.
