Fiji Labour Party criticises television over death threat report

The Fiji Labour Party has criticised television for broadcasting a report on a death threat against a prominent politician.

Police have confirmed a Fiji TV report last night that said an anonymous caller had rung a police station to say the politician would be assassinated soon.

Police haven't named the threatened politician.

Pictures have been published in Fiji showing what appeared to be light flak jackets given to officers guarding the Labour leader, Mahendra Chaudhry.

The Labour MP, Ganesh Chand, says the report has created anxiety...

"There is a real problem in the sense that people are not aware of details of the alleged threat, and they're all talking without any information."

However, Ganesh Chand adds that the media has a responsibility to pass on to the public all the information that it has, so that the public can make its own assessment of any threat.
