The United Nations Development Programme, with assistance from the Australian government, is launching a project to strengthen Pacific parliaments.

Garry Wiseman of the UNDP says the project flows the organisation's work on improving governance.

He says this included a legislative needs assessment which produced recommendations to improve the operation of the parliaments.

"Including the operation of committees, the effectiveness of the standing orders, the legal frameworks around how the parliament operates and relates to the government."

Garry Wiseman of the UNDP says the first step in the Parliamentary Strengthening Project is to hold a workshop of speakers and their clerks, and this will happen in Samoa next month.
