Indonesian police say they have arrested three people suspected of financing illegal logging in the province of Papua.

The national chief of detectives, Sutiyono Landung, says three suspects, all Indonesian citizens, were arrested in Sorong in Papua during the weekend.

He says the three were executives of small timber processing companies.

Chief Landung also says that police have confiscated four barges, heavy machinery and more than 46 thousand cubic meters of timber.

Last month an environmental group Telapac released a report detailing evidence of a huge illegal operation in Papua,in which it claimed more than 300,000 cubic meters of timber was being removed from the province each month.
