Three rioters have been jailed in New Caledonia after last week's violent clashes in a suburb of the capital, Noumea, which saw nine people wounded including six police officers.

The newspaper, Les Nouvelles Caledoniennes, says two people appeared in court on Sunday evening, and have been sent to the Camp Est prison, along with a third who already been sentenced.

Police arrested 20 people last Friday after about 20 officers intervened in a fight involving 200 youths in the district of Montravel.

The police staff union says it hopes the punishments handed down to the ringleaders will serve as examples.

The union reports crime in Noumea rose by 17.5 per cent last year.

It says clashes with youths will get more violent if nothing is done to stop them,
