Fiji's Prime Minister vows to root out corruption

7:33 am on 14 March 2005

Fiji's prime minister has vowed that his government is committed to rooting out corruption and creating conditions which make it difficult for it to flourish.

Laisenia Qarase made the comments at the Prime Minister's Corporate Governance Summit held at the weekend.

Mr Qarase said corruption was a stain on the integrity of the nation and diminished its moral fibre.

He said corruption hindered investment, and slowed growth, contributed to unemployment, lead to a reduction in living standards and reduced government revenue.

Mr Qarase said the exact extent of corruption in Fiji was hard to quantify because by its nature it was a shadowy and hidden thing.

He said the public service commission has set up a unit to investigate reports of corruption.
