Planned unrest at Fiji prison protest against conditions - report

9:17 am on 18 March 2005

Reports in Fiji say unrest allegedly planned in Suva prison had been misinterpreted as an impending uprising.

Police have been probing reports the unrest had been scheduled to take place next week, and whether it was linked to political prisoners who are inmates.

But Fijilive reports a former inmate who was recently released on bail from the Suva jail, as saying the prisoners were actually planning to protest against the inhumane conditions on the premises.

The alarm was reportedly raised by an officer at the Suva Prison who said he had heard widespread rumours amongst prisoners there.
